The KM classes started with some pad work and worked into dealing with combination attacks. For example, two hooks, or a hook and a straight punch. We then moved onto knife threats. We also jumped into Tactical Edge and covered some edged weapon drills to relax after the Combat Sport class. Here's what Rannoch had to say about the class "In combat sport you can tell a fighter by the way they stand. Before a punch is thrown. Chin tucked, shoulders up, elbows down and that dissolved gaze that takes everything in. There is intention and that is a product of practice. If you get bored with the basics you aren't paying attention. If you aren't paying attention that's when someone smaller, slower, weaker and less experienced will take your head off.
I had to smile last night when I looked around the room and saw a bunch of fighters. I am the first to admit that Jab, Cross, Jab can wear a bit thin but the weeks of repetition are paying off, big time. I could hear it in the confident thwack off the pads, the sharp exhale on contact and the sound of feet light and fast on the mats.
After a warm up of CR push ups, jump squats and jogging we explored range with simple tapping drills to find the sweet spot where we can counter. Light and fast to find each others jab and cross. Next we added a touch to the head, again finding range. After another round we added body shots, light touches, feinting and slipping. All of these drills are like a super fast game of tig. No power, just speed. Without speed strength becomes a brake. It's important to do these drills with out gloves. Any addition of protective gear changes the dynamic. Finally we added low stop kicks and checks. At the end of this section we were moving in all directions and using all limbs.
Next we introduced the pads. Setting up the usual combos working of Jab & cross. For the next round we added returning hooks from the pads making the striker bob and weave.
Next we added returning head shots so that the striker had to cover up, shielding the head with their elbow . Finally we added four returning hooks off the jab and cross covering high then low. This ability to cover will lead us into counters next week.
It was great to see everyone moving, making use of their ranges. now that we are nailing the basics we can start to explore some more sophisticated drills with confidence. Well done to everyone last night, you looked the part".
