We started working tools including palm heel, elbows, hammers strikes to variations directions. Then we worked some combos on the pads. Situationals included outside punches, chokes on the ground, and ground and pound defence on the ground. We looked at using our tools and ensuring our body mechanics ensured we were covered in case of the attacker striking us with the other hand in the midst of the furball. We looked at how we could transform the defences into working other lines. You had to be there, the class was full of gold.
This weeks warm up was the ZOO. Duck walks, bunny hops, bear walks, lunges and body drags all done forwards and back. Simple but never easy! This week we focused on playing the defensive game. Depending on range and the attack we can bob and weave, level change, slip or simply step back. We worked these moves off Jab and cross. Once we were familiar with the options we added a counter jab - cross and used this as the foundation for some slow sparring. Once you add hooks onto the mix you pretty much have the bases covered. How you move defensively is dictated by range. Every attack has an appropriate response. All these drills fit together to create a rounded approach. If we only work with people at the same level as us we develop a comfort zone that will cause nothing but trouble when the status quo changes. Remember, every student is a coach, every coach is a student. Use what you know to help those around you.
So, Lot's of movement, no blood but plenty of sweat and a much tighter performance by all concerned. The fundamentals are becoming part of your game, shoulders covering chin, hands going back to defense after every punch, elbows covering ribs, springing forward and back. Well done to everyone, good job!
