The intermediate class was going over the material for the Tactical Edge grading this Saturday. Combat Sport class began with skipping and kettlebell intervals. One minute on, 30 seconds off for 3 rounds of skipping and 15 on 15 off for kettlebell swings for five minutes (and for the more experienced, snatches).
We then worked our movement, forward, back, left and right - remembering to move by shifiting the foot in the direction we are going first and following with the other. Centre of mass over base of support! Hands up at all times.
Next, we did some mirror drills with one person following the other as closely as possible. This teaches us to stick with an opponenet as the advance and retreat.
We followed this with intensive padwork drills. Using our standard three drills -
Jab, Cross
Jab, Cross, Hook
Jab, Cross, Hook, Cross
We finished by adding elbows to the mix.
It is crucial we develop our padwork. It is the single most useful tool we have to learn target aquisition whilst retaining a defensive posture. I can't stress how important it is to find the pads and strike cleanly. Speed and precision are the order of the day. Save the big heavy shots for the Heavy bag. As for the folks feeding the pads, this is a perfect opportunity to learn how to intercept incoming shots. The pad holders job is not a static one, use the drill to get a feel for distance and timing. And finally, remember, if you strike like clockwork, you are predictable. We'll work on breaking rhythm and syncopating strikes in the coming weeks.
The beginners KM class dealt with working front kicks and different ways we can deal with this.
