From there straight into working on the focus mitts developing speed and rhythm with some conditioning drills thrown in.  We finished off working power kicks on the thai pads. We looked at the ideas behind the nerve impulse reversal and how we can use this principle when seeking control of the limb. From there it was onto pad work working attack, defence and perimeter control.  We focussed on attacks on the ground and stressed the need for getting up as quickly as possible. All the tools in the sets  could be used to defend against so many attacks.  We worked some shadow fighting trying to further develop our physical and also mental visualisation skills.  We concentrated on defending against a headlock from the rear.  I spoke about prevention and offered two options.  At the end of the day the situation will more than likely arise out of surprise and be the result of a multiple attack therefore not much room for prevention.  We worked the release in isolation and then as part of a multiple attack drill. I stressed the need for being a difficult partner once in a while.  If you see your partner has the skills down then foul him a little.  This will force him to improvise and adapt.  However, you can't do this all the time as it can create a poor training environment and hinder their development. Also, they then can do the same to you.  So every once in a while foul a little.  If you do it too much you end up with nobody wanting to partner you.  This came about through demonstrations last night where a couple of the guys whether deliberately or not fowled me.  So, build it into your training and keep yourself sharp. I spoke at length last night about effort and the original idea behind why Krav Maga Edinburgh chose kettle bells as the weapon off choice for training. We were probably one of the first gyms in Edinburgh to make full use of them back in the Edinburgh Judo Club under the guidance of Rannoch Donald. They were a tool to provide a maximum workout in a short period of time.  Every drill you do in class should be like its your last.  No pacing yourself. I demonstrated swinging a KB and then I demonstrated really swinging one. Regardless of weight you can make it challenging or you can coast. I swung a 20kg with as much venom as I did the 12kg.  You can get a great workout from a light weight just up the intensity.  With this in mind I am considering doing two thirty minute kettle bell classes on a Tuesday. So you come in, do a dynamic warm up, do the drill of the day, quick cool down and out. I hate the thought of swinging Kbs for an hour - it goes against the nature of them. I thought that with the first week back we would concentrate on building fitness levels back up to where we were before the holidays.  After skipping we went into a good solid 20 minutes of bodyweight drills.  Then onto partner drills with the thai pads. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In NSI it was back to some of the fundamentals of movement against edged weapons. We looked at knife defence and then finished off with the kickboxing syllabus using feet, hands, knees, elbows, face cranks and controlling manoeuvres.  &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Great effort from everyone. Tonights focus was about seeing what people remembered after all the fuss of xmas and new year had worn off. We started with our straight blast limb destruction drill then gradually worked in different strikes from the syllabus, lastly we added a takedown of choice to help control the opponent to our common finishing position. There was a few cob web's to be dusted off but everyone was flowing by the end.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kettlebells&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first big session started with us using the card system for a warm up, this is when we take a deck of playing cards and give a body weight exercise to each suit in the deck and the card number represents the number of reps to perform. I think everyone would agree its a great, fast and fun way to get moving and although this was a warm up don't be fooled into thinking it was a nice easy workout, it was non-stop and everyone deserves a tip of the hat for pushing through and not stopping once. From there we moved onto a few basic kettlebell routines in isolation then built them into a great solid workout for everyone to blast through. Fantastic class and i was really impressed with everyones work ethic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mixed Kickboxing&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After a nice fast warm up the class went through some basics on the pads, we concentrated on proper footwork, body mechanics and some basic combinations. Remember guys the basics are your foundation and the footwork will only come with the three "R"s repetition repetition repetition. Once we got these out the way we got smashing through some combinations, great work from everyone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Krav Maga&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This Week is back to basics, we used the 'card' warm up like in the kettlebell class to get everyone moving then it was into some pad work taking various strikes from the syllabus. We then looked at basic target acquisition and moving around our opponents and continued onto some slow fighting. I stressed the need for good awareness and the fact that we teach the guys how to control their environment and not get put in a headlock or not get grabbed etc.  We don't always want to start in these bad positions as that's training you to have your guard down all the time. Before the class I told the guys the aim of the class - to perform not to coast. I don't want people keeping some in reserve, I want everything you have put into that current exercise. We looked at defences against impact weapons both utilising a baton and empty hand. Keep in mind we try and work off a basic format.  Once you have that it is up to you to add in your own sugar and spice and also take into account the energy from the opponent. Last night for example if your opponent didn't move forward then you couldn't apply the control with the stick.  So if they don't bend forward then don't attempt the control.  In training they should give your the correct energy so you can learn the concept.  Every so often they can fowl you and make you work for your money.  Never forget that if i hit you in the groin the chances are if you don't collapse on the floor you will at least hollow out regardless of me hitting you or not.  If i hit you in face you are moving backwards.  If I hit you in the face more than once your hands are coming up to protect.  You don't have to be a genius to work out simple patterns of human behaviour.  And remember don't confuse any of this with sport.  In a ring where you are paid to stand your ground, wear gloves, have a ref and no fear of any other people attacking you its a different ball game.  Different adrenaline dump and everything. Second private lesson so we looked at various attacks and threats.  The woman was performing excellently, talented and able to absorb and pick up the material quickly.  We spoke briefly about the verbal side as it was a threat and of course the individual will speak to you to say what they want.  Now I said they can either shout at you or speak  slowly and assertively but with a menacing tone.  i told them that most people were beaten before a punch is ever thrown as they cannot deal or do not train to deal with the aggressive language.  So immediately the husband screams at his wife and threatens her and all of a sudden she freezes and doesn't act.  Now this is someone that she loves and sees everyday yet she couldn't handle the shouting part. It is a lesson for us all.  Its a horrible experience to have someone shout at you like this.  Mark Davies is excellent at it.  One minute he is all calm the next he is threatening you and I swear you can see people adrenaline dumping in a classroom environment. I attended a seminar with Richard Dimitri years ago in London and the opening drill was three people just shouting and being aggressive towards you to try and desensitise you to it.  It's not everyones cup of tea, and in truth if you did it in class every week most people would jack in the training.  However, every so often its good to throw in and help people excel in their training and be prepared for violence.  Michael often does it in the Tactical Edge class which is good. From there it was onto the pads to look at developing various strikes in combinations. We then looked at the scooping motion and how it relates to defending kicks and stabbing actions.  We looked at the pros and cons of using both out left and right hands.  One would close an attacker whereas the other one would open them up.  I said that the idea behind the scoop in KM is more of an action where you are less prepared so in the heat of battle you are simply going to react, you don't have time to think about is left better than right.  We looked at some ideas for multiple attacks drills and closing distance, using an attacker as a shield and concentrated on realistic timings with our multiple attackers.  Too often people wait around when in reality they act like a pack of dogs.  At the end of the session we covered the various strikes we had used then said well we can use them both left and right.  We had close to 20 tools. So if you are sharp you get the material, train it at home or in your head and hey presto you have all this knowledge.  Everything we do is scalable.  So I give you a basic template and then if you can keep up I give you more options.  For the new guys though less can be best.  Get the fundamentals nailed.  Bruce Lee always spent time on the fundamentals.  In Krav Maga all the good solid material is found in the early stages. The later stuff is really icing on the cake and to keep you interested and motivated. On average about one in ten people are left handed so we want to go with percentages in our training.  So the majority of the time we concentrate on being attached with someone wielding a weapon in their right hand for example.  We have an hours class in which time we need to work on explosive fitness to better equip our bodies for combat. We need to work on tool and target development and then look at specific attacks.  On Monday we concentrated on being attacked by a leftie. We looked at foot work drills, striking and attacks using both arms and then just one. I stressed the need for closest tool to closest target and to make sure that strikes were to vulnerable areas.  Also, that all attacks were true. So if its a stick attack then aim to hit with the stick so you are building your skills using a common object. If I practice the 360 defence then as the attacker I am developing my outside attacks whilst the defender practices defence.  Simple but often over looked by many. We looked at the heaven six series and some training that can be done in your own time.  It was a great bunch of practitioners last night who I said knew all there was to know. All I was going to do was provide them with ideas on how to train and correct any mistakes that I could see.  The emphasis was on them picking things apart and extracting the information and using it rather than spoon feeding combative sets one after another.  Obviously, this isn't the approach you would use with a beginner but these were all experienced practitioners. It's easy at this time of year to get complacent and say I will bump training and get back into it in the new year.  It's great to have goals and targets so why not make one to come and train at least one night a week in the run up to Xmas.  With classes running all week and at the weekend you have plenty to choose from. One of the guys came in and had got a tattoo done and said he couldn't train because of it. So I had the class go through various situationals where they damage their dominant arm and have to use the other one.  It's a good thing to do and keeps you sharp. I rarely have guys practice things on the left and right side.  Most people are right handed and we train for the most likely attacks.  If we have time then sure develop the non dominant side but we are dealing with probabilities and have a time limit.  If we trained every night then left and ride side is a great thing but we simply don't have the time in KM.  However, with training in NSI and TE you can develop left and right handed skills through the use of the stick. We looked at empty hand defences and also using common objects to defend and counter. We looked at how the control methods with the common objects link into our empty hand actions. The injuries sustained by the officers were all from a low line attack so we ran through a low line version of hubud to gain some sensitivity and then looked at our passing actions and our disarm and returning blade syllabus. For those that don’t really come to Tactical Edge the ComSets are a basic map of strikes and tactics we use to deal with a particular style of attack or situation, last night we used that big right handed haymaker as our stimulus. We gradually worked in the empty hand rotary pick action and really focused on that the rest of the class. Remember guys the ‘rotary’ pick series is all reverse grip knife which really suits T.E. because of the improvised weapon applications we can incorporate into it. We looked at the ‘pick’ and the ‘claw’ drills then split these up to use them as we saw fit in the situational’ s  working from a counter attack a pre-emptive attack and as a defensive action. The drills in Tactical Edge are all really open to interpretation, as drills in any art are mainly used to gain line familiarization. With this in mind the guys were all reacting well and using great sharp strikes and finishing the encounter effectively. Given that Michael has a good thai background I had him take the guys through some kicking and dynamic stretching drills.  From there we looked at defending from a hooking punch and utilising round kicks as we escaped from the situation.  We then looked at intercepting with kicks and then entering into clinch range.  Remember if you can kick high in class with power then think how much power you can deliver on the low line outside if required in a self defence situation. Michael stressed to the guys that you won't have time to stretch when it kicks off.  Also outside there are uneven surfaces, it can be slippy. Kickboxing on Monday focussed heavily on conditioning and last night's class looked at footwork.  The theme this week for Krav Maga will be multiple opponents as last week someone was attacked on Leith walk and robbed by three people.  This is the month where you need to get to class and train hard.  Decemeber for most people can be a tricky time to train with work and family commitments, so get along now and put the time in.  Some people are training almost everyday which is a joy for me to see. Even if you can only come once a week, try and make sure you come every week.  If you want to improve yourself then you need to make time.  It's easy to find an excuse not to train.  It's harder to go and train when it's cold and dark outside. The guys smashed they’re way through sets of 2 minute rounds using various hammer, palm heel and forearm strike’s from there we dumped the pads and went into some little com sets to put these strikes to good use. Tonight’s drill consisted of cover and slash, this drill is primarily a reverse grip knife drill and once we got it flowing I reminded the guys that anytime we cover any form of karambit or reverse grip knife we’re essentially working our empty hand elbows. We finished off by dissecting the drill and pulling some great functional movement out of it. Everyone got flowing with the drill at some point but remember you get better by doing! So get practising at home and you’ll see a vast improvement when it comes to pulling some functionality out of these drills. You really should be wearing a gum shield and a groin guard.  When energy is high you can take an accidental knock.  Be prepared and get the kit from the gym. It was a fairly gruelling session but everyone fought they’re way through. We then switched pace towards the end of the class and focused on a intense 3min set with 30 seconds rest. The class finished with a great stretching session to send everyone home nice and relaxed. Great effort tonight from everyone, it was a difficult set but everyone just got on with it, remember you get out what you put in.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Mixed Kickboxing&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Last night we went on a old school warm up ‘judo club’ style, I must say this was a easy but fast paced warm up and a lot of these guys had just been through an hour of kettlebell work so a major tip of the hat to you for the pace you all kept. Dimitri then took the guys through various pad set combo’s, we really slowed down the techniques and showed them in a more combative sense and put emphasis on body mechanics and targeting. Remember guy’s are classes at Combat Ready all centre on being reality based, there really isn’t a substitute for good quick striking ability and our kickboxing classes are designed for just that, lots of reps of high percentage hits and targets its also a fantastic and fun way to get into shape. Putting the fun in ‘fun’ctionality. Great effort guy’s and remember the new timetable has a kickboxing class almost every week night so there’s now no excuse to train!  &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Krav Maga&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Starting off with a moderate body weight warm up Dimitri took the class through a series of comsets on the pads, setting up various kicks and strikes. The past two weeks have been about goin back to basics and we threw the guys into a simple but really intense multiple attack drill, remember if there are a bunch of guys picking on you they’re not gonna line up and let you smack them, we don’t train to be in a van damme movie, we have to physically orientate ourselves to acquire a target and there’s no place this is more relevant then when dealing with multiple attackers. Great effort, especially to those handful of guys that stayed for all three classes. There’s no question that fun sparring  like this build’s a huge degree of attributes, we get timing, distance, footwork, target acquisition, explosive movement and we get to work our faints and guard positions. From there we picked up the sticks and went straight onto 3 count sumbrada, we went medium range then out to long range and then into a double grip version in which we likened the stick to a sword or katana, this really helped accent how important footwork and body mechanics can be when using these types of weapons. I showed the guys a double stick variation which got the brains fried a little bit but the guy’s pulled it off and we’re moving really well. We finished the night by stripping the drill down to empty hand and working through some common angles of attack using the 3 count patterns of movement. Remember guys Monday night is drill night at Tactical Edge Edinburgh and there’s no way to get better at these other than coming along and training, we also get to dissect these drill and show how to pull the attributes from them. We started looking at the traditional battlefield applications and then toned it down and looked how we could use it as an impact tool and then to control. As it's get colder we will just have to wrap up a bit more.  We started developing our strikes and then concentrated on defending straight lowline knife attacks with a scooping motion. I demonstrated how this could be used against an upward attack that would normally be reserved for a 360 defence. However, you are meant to be taken by surprise so training needs to reflect this. We looked at moving to the dead side and also the live side. We looked at methods of control and also some knife disarms. Started off with jumping rope and then into some very testing bodyweight drills.  All the drills had alternative versions if you couldn't quite manage it.  From there we delved into the swing text and then partnered up for the rest of the class with one person doing a kettle bell exercise while the other did a complimentary bodyweight exercise. From there we looked at 3 count in long range and then in medium range using the live hand.  We then put an edged weapon in the live hand to cut instead of check with.  From there we did sumbrada with the knife and then looked at combative application from it.  We looked at versions where we used the punyo strike and then looked to take the vision.  We looked at what to do if they checked your strike when trying to take their vision. We looked at trying to draw our opponent in to a circular punch by shutting down our centre line.  We looked at defences against grabs and headbutts and also looked at tells.  These are the give aways that should set alarm bells ringing that you are about to be attacked. From there we moved onto empty hand applications. Buy a set of sticks from the gym for £12 and get training at home or you will spend the next ten years trying to improve it in class. We have such a wide curriculum to cover, so if you want it to stick and be effective then you need to do some study at home.
